All About Me

Hi, I’m Samantha Kehoe, but I prefer to be called Sam. My major is graphic design and I’m getting my associates at Harper College. I took Web150 over the summer and I’m taking Web170 right now. In hindsight, I probably should have taken this class first, but hindsight is 20/ 20. I’m interested in Web a lot and I’m excited to learn more about WordPress and UI (User Interface). I feel like I should practice coding and become more accustomed to domains like WordPress to be more well rounded when looking for jobs. I found this job path later than most. It was hard to find something I was interested in and could see myself doing for a long time without getting bored of it right away. I love how trends are always changing in the design world. Print and web seem to constantly be evolving as time goes on. It keeps things interesting when you are constantly learning. I need to practice coding a lot more though. Practice makes perfect but coding is like math or a language when you don’t use it, you lose it. I still consider myself a beginner in coding. I only know Html and CSS.

Final course reflection

I really enjoyed the class. the lecture notes were really helpful to look over before the quizzes. I think you did a great job teaching the class. It was nice that at had lab time at Harper and home to work on our projects. And I thought it was really helpful having you walk us through how to the basics of our WordPress site and app. Thank you!

What do you wish you had an app for? Is such an app possible?

I wish there was an app you can schedule every appointment though. I know certain businesses use apps to schedule appointments. But I want a singular app where you can schedule everything though. That way you do not have to make a bunch of phone calls or write the appointment time on a piece of paper. A piece of paper you are going to eventually lose before the date of the appointment. I think that would be really cool and help organize a lot of people’s lives. Sadly I do not think it would be possible. I do not think every business would do it unless somehow Apple or Google did it. Even then there would be some outlying businesses.
Another idea is an app that tracks exactly how and where you spend your money. I am not sure if this app already exists. Even if it did not you could easily make an excel spreadsheet. It would just be very tedious and time-consuming.

Describe your favorite app, why you use it, who you think the targeted audience is, and what you like/dislike about it

My favorite app of all time is most likely YouTube even though it is a website. I almost exclusively watch YouTube on my phone. I love the variety of it. There are tutorials, music, comedy, interviews. There is something for everyone on that site. I can spend hours watching videos. It became popular when I was in middle school and I have loved it ever since. YouTube recently changed where the comments are found on the app and I don’t like the new place. I am sure I will get used to it soon. They have changed subtle things about their layout a lot over the years. Recently however I downloaded the app Tik Tok and I have been enjoying it a lot. It reminds me of the app Vine which is no longer around. If it was still around it would probably be my favorite app. I would always laugh at Vines and I still find them very funny and Tik Tok reminds me a lot of Vine.

Reflect on being constantly connected: How is it good? How is it bad?

There are positives and negatives to being constantly connected to technology. One negative An example of a negative is. I tend to have racing thoughts, especially at night when I am trying to sleep. I will have a thought or a question that I want to look up and it is really easy to go on your phone and get lost in it instead of going to sleep. I have pulled all-nighters completely on accident before from just coming up with questions and looking these up on Google or watching YouTube videos. Then I realize I have to be up for school or work in 3 hours. Not ideal. Another negative example is almost everyone is glued to their phone that if you don’t respond to people right away they can get mad at you or think you are ignoring them when in fact you could just be busy. The plus side though you can have the answers to the questions keeping you up at night at the tips of your fingers. You are constituent learning and technology makes it so easy to learn as well.

What did you like about WordPress? What did you dislike?

WordPress was difficult at first but once you get the hang of it it becomes slightly easier. I feel like I was always confused about where things are located. I would look under one spot and it turns out it was somewhere completely different. I enjoyed the documentation for my theme. It was very helpful. Once I understood where things were in the navigation it just became more tedious than confusing. I enjoy it a lot better than coding though. It makes it a lot simpler using something like WordPress then having to find a whole website by yourself. To be honest I should have played with the site more but I procrastinated too much to fully get the hang of it.

Reflect on a time that technology got you in trouble.

The time technology got me in trouble I tried to sneak out of the house. I wanted to hang out with my friends but I was grounded from going out. I slept downstairs on the couch that night so my mom wouldn’t notice when I left my room because I have had to pass her room to go downstairs. I left the TV one to cover up the sound of the front door squeaking open and was gone for a few hours. It was 12 am or 1 am when I receive a call from my mom. She woke up to go to the bathroom and heard the TV on still. she went downstairs to check if I was still up and to turn the TV off if I was asleep and discovered I was not home. I got grounded even longer. Now including phone and TV too.

Reflect on a time that technology saved the day for you

Technology often saves the day for me. I have a bad sense of direction and easily get lost. I also make wrong turns quite easily. It’s not that I’m distracted while driving it is more so I’m hyper focused on the task of driving. If I did not have a GPS on my phone I would be driving around for hours trying to find my way. I have also gone to the store or out to get food and went to pay and realize I forgot my card. If I did not have my phone to use apple pay it would be quite embarrassing after almost getting done checking out at the grocery store. I started carrying cash on me as well for this reason. Normally grab my card from my wallet to pay for something online and I will put it back right away. But this is what happens when I do not put it back right away.

How has the internet changed the way you work?

The internet changed the way I work because it tends to be more convenient to look something up online then ask someone. Even if someone is down the hall we end up emailing them instead of getting up to ask them in person. There is less face to face interaction. We don’t need to go to the library anymore to get a book to learn how to do something. We just look for a tutorial online. It has become more independent. You have to maintain motivation and focus while working online. I find it is easy to distract yourself when working online. You can easily pull up a new browsing window or look on your phone. When working online you tend to be home and I find it helpful to have a separate space to work. It helps me to understand I need to focus and concentrate now. I have moved into my work are.

Nosedive

In the beginning, Lacie wanted everyone to like her. She was obsessed with it and would change herself to get 5 stars. She thought it would bring her happiness to be well-liked. After she was a high four she would be happy but she didn’t find happiness until she went to jail I think. The trunk driver opened her eyes that likes are not the only thing in life.

Social media dictates social stature because when you get a lot of follows people tend to know who you are. You become popular and people want to talk about you. You might get good or bad press, but it is still press. It gets your name out there. People want to be popular on social media. Social media creates internet stars. Being an internet star seems more attainable than other celebrities. Internet stars tend to be more relatable and I think that’s why they are so popular.

Social media has a hold on us because people only showing the highlights. It makes you think that everyone’s life is perfect no matter how much you know its fake. It can be hard to remember that people don’t show bad times on social media often. Most people want to show/remember happy times. It creates a hold because you don’t want to present the best version of yourself to the world and that can be a lie. You might edit your photos or even have a photo smiling even though you were crying an hour ago.

How has the internet changed the way you keep in touch?

The internet changed the way I keep in touch with social media. I can see my friends’ posts and can comment on it. I can also share by posting for others to see. It is a nice way to stay updated without having to talk one on one. Another way is Skype/facetime. I have a cousin that lives in Florida and us facetime a lot. It is nice because I am able to see and talk to her and her baby. It makes you feel more connected then if we just texted or even called each other. When my sisters visited Europe we were still able to contact each other even though we did not have a worldwide phone plan. We are very lucky to have the advancements in technology we do now because we would not be able to communicate with people around the globe. It is a great luxury that I have not thought much about before this.
